RI greyhound racing The Governor has vetoed this bill. The legislature, which is heavily politicized in RI, will, in all likliehood, reconvene and override his veto. My wife and I live in RI and go to Twin River occasionally and enjoy watching the greyhounds run (she loves greyhounds and wants to adopt one but we live in a condo and have size limitations), but this arrangement they have just does not make economic sense. Twin River is on the verge of bankruptcy and if this bill goes through, it may be the straw that breaks the camel's back. If it is, there will be no Twin River or racing. The dog owners association claims there will be a loss of over 200 jobs (others disagree). If Twin River closes, there will be many more than that and the loss of over $200 Million to the State in revenue each year. I sympathize with the dog owners and don't want to see greyhound racing end, but it just doesn't make sense under the present system. Better to change the system than lose the jobs. |
